Eric Berne transitioned from psychoanalysis to transactional analysis in his theory of ego states. As Raymond Hostie tells us he began that journey in 1956.
There are three psychic organs
The Exteropsyche
The Neopsyche
The Archeopsyche
One sees diagrams like this
Psychic organs are all connected up with psychoanalysis and it is how Eric Berne first began to understand ego states. Ego states and psychic organs (i.e. psychoanalysis) were all interconnected. Slowly but surely he disconnected the two as this diagram shows.
In 1957 Berne wrote the book – Intuition and ego states
In 1961 Berne wrote the book – Transactional Analysis in Psychotherapy
In 1972 Berne wrote the book – What do you say after you say hello?
In 1972 his separation from psychoanalysis was complete at least as far as ego states are concerned.
The different schools of transactional analysis adopt different points on the line of transition of ego states from psychoanalysis to transactional analysis. The problem is they all use the same terms – “Ego state“. But the theory of ego states in 1972 is completely different to the theory of ego states in 1960. They are in essence talking about two quite different things but they seem the same because the use the same terms – Parent, Adult & Child.
