People power and the graffiti art movement

Sociologically this is most unusual. It is a case of people power, winning over money power and political power.

Here is some very nice street art in Kiev. As i have mentioned before this is an anomaly because it is a young persons picture. I have also included what I would see as an old persons picture. A landscape with a lovely tree and rolling hills. It brings one a sense of serenity and harmonious feelings. Quite different from a picture of a young child with a maze for a head, kneeling on a magic flying carpet, flying over a city with a jacket that looks like an evil character hanging on his back.

The people who made the decision to spend the money to pay for the mural in Kiev would not be young people in their teens or early twenties. They would be people who have got themselves into a  position of power to make decisions to spend that kind of money. They would be at least middle aged. So why such a young person’s picture? And as we know this is typical of such street art. Street art murals are not old people pictures. They are young people pictures but it is not young people deciding on having such street art.

As we know, the sociologist in me says this anomaly is happening because it is the young who evolved the graffiti art movement in our cities across the world. By doing such graffiti they are demanding that we take notice of them and recognise them as inhabitants of our cites as well. It would seem they have achieved their goal as many many cities across the world are now doing that, by putting young peoples pictures throughout their cities. Our cities now recognize the young people who inhabit them which also gives the city a youthful, alive feeling as well.

Sociologically this is most unusual. It is a case of people power, winning over money power and political power. This only occurs very rarely.  Power groups like the police, the press and the politicians have worked long and hard to eradicate the graffiti art movement from existence. But they have failed, the young have persisted and now those with power and money have joined them and are painting the walls of our cites like the graffiti art movement has been doing so for years.
